Welcome to the Empire of the Seven Continents

The Empire of the Seven Continents is the home of the Imperial Saga, a fantasy series by Anne Winchell. This website offers exclusive content of the world and novels and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the writing process. Take a look around and explore the world of the Empire of the Seven Continents and the books and stories from this world!

Enter the Imperial Saga

The war for Tamarud lasted twelve years and devastated the continent’s people and lands. When the royal family was captured, everyone knew it was it was only a matter of time before their defeat, but the Empire shocked the people by executing all but the youngest two royals.

Fifteen years later, the continent of Tamarud has suffered under Imperial rule. After the massacre following the execution of the royals, the population is devastated, their numbers vastly diminished. Everyone in a fifteen year age group was murdered, leaving only older adults and those under twenty-five behind.

Now, the invaders, as those from the Empire are known, can kill at will, and wreak havoc on the people of Tamarud. Tamarudian culture has all but vanished as their books, art, and traditional buildings have been razed. Speaking their language is a death sentence, and they even have to choose Imperial names to avoid being killed.

In this chaos and destruction, Princess Tahirah is coming into her magical powers. As one of two surviving royals, she wields enormous power, power that makes her both threatening and desirable to the Empire. Her rise to power is marked with death and isolation, but romance and hope keep her going.

These five novels chart her progress as she gains her adult powers, and the increasing strength of her allies as well. Ari, a young man and the object of her affections, learns to stand on his own, and Jana, a young woman whose love for her girlfriend Leena is the only bright spot in her life, learns to take on a leadership role. Together, Ari, Jana, and Leena hope to help save Tahirah from the Empire. They’ll go to any lengths, but will it be enough?

Rise of the Phoenix is a fantasy novel about a young woman who survived the execution of her family at the end of the war and now lives in an occupied continent. She’s always pretended to be obedient, but she has a secret: she’s created a phoenix egg.

The people of Tamarud remember the brutality of the dragon knights long after the war ended. When Jana accidentally becomes a dragon knight, she must deal with the hatred of her father and her people even while fighting to defend her home.

Ari has always relied on loved ones for guidance, but now Tahirah is trapped on a different continent and his parents might be dead. With new friends and unfamiliar family, he has to forge a way forward even as the Empire’s power draws closer to finding him.

Full lyrics:

(Verse 1)
They built their towers out of fear and flame
Taught every heart to forget its name
But I still hear it beneath the noise
A fragile truth they could not destroy

I walked the streets where the silence grew
Where hope was something we never knew
But even there in the ash and stone
I found a place I could call my own

(Pre-Chorus)
You say the world is only breaking
That love is just a losing fight
But I have seen what still awakens
In the quiet of the night

(Chorus)
I am the bloom in the burning
The light you couldn’t erase
You call it soft, call it weakness
I call it staying in place

If I bend, I’m not breaking
If I fall, I will rise
You can’t take what I’m choosing
I am more than survives

(Verse 2)
You wear your armor like second skin
A war you carry deep within
Every scar is a line you drew
Between the world and what hurt you

But I have touched what you try to hide
The part of you that still feels alive
You say you’re made of smoke and steel
But even steel remembers how to heal

(Pre-Chorus)
You think the fire is your only truth
That mercy only leads to pain
But I have seen what grows in ruin
And I will not turn away

(Chorus)
I am the bloom in the burning
The light you couldn’t erase
You call it soft, call it weakness
I call it staying in place

If I bend, I’m not breaking
If I fall, I will rise
You can’t take what I’m choosing
I am more than survives

(Bridge)
If your hands are made of shadows
I will not pull away
I will stand where you are trembling
I will choose to stay

Not to save you
Not to change you
Not to make your darkness mine
But to show you
There is still a line
You have not crossed this time

(Final Chorus)
I am the bloom in the burning
The calm inside the storm
You thought the world would harden me
But I refused that form

If I love, it’s not surrender
If I reach, it’s not in vain
I will stand in all this breaking
And still choose to remain

(Outro)
You were made beneath the fire
I was not
But I stayed

And where the world fell into ruin
I grew anyway

Full lyrics:

(Verse 1)
They hand me blankets, give me space
Call me “safe” with careful faces
Tell me I can finally breathe
Like breathing’s something I still need

No buzzing lights above my bed
No countdown pulsing in my head
No polished halls, no measured tone
No one deciding where I go

So why do I feel lost alone?

(Pre-Chorus)
Freedom tastes like empty rooms
Like silence stretched too wide
Everyone here calls this healing
But I think they’re watching me die

(Chorus)
I want the cage I know
The hand that held the key
The voice that always knew exactly
What to do with me

I know that sounds like weakness
I know how wrong it seems
But comfort wears familiar shapes
Even inside chains

They say I finally escaped
Like I should feel reborn
But I miss the life that hurt me
More than the world I’m in now

(Verse 2)
Emma looks at me like blood
Like history should mean enough
But she’s a ghost from childhood halls
A name I barely know at all

Aaron knew the way I shook
Before the fever overtook
Knew which nightmares pulled me under
Knew the silence, knew the hunger

Eight years doesn’t disappear
Just because the locks are gone
You can’t tear roots out overnight
And still expect the tree lives on

(Pre-Chorus)
Every street here feels uncertain
Every choice feels sharp and strange
Back there every hour was written
And maybe I liked it that way

(Chorus)
I want the cage I know
The hand against my spine
The quiet halls, the loaded calm
The life that once was mine

I hated every second
I swore I wanted out
So why does freedom feel more frightening
Than the things I fled without?

They call me brave for leaving
But honestly I’m not
Because part of me is already turning
Back toward what I lost

(Bridge)
And maybe it’s the poison talking
Maybe it’s the ache beneath my skin
Maybe withdrawal sounds like longing
When your body’s caving in

Maybe I’m confusing love
With dependence, fear, routine
Maybe I was never rescued
Maybe I just changed machines

But when I close my eyes at night
I still hear his voice cut through
Not the handlers
Not the orders

Aaron

Just Aaron

Saying:
“Come back soon.”

(Final Chorus)
I want the cage I know
Even knowing what it cost
Because out here in all this freedom
I don’t know who I am at all

Everyone says keep running
Build a life and start again
But I was shaped by walls and wires
And I don’t know how to bend

So if I walk back willingly
Tell me what that really means
Did I choose the chains that held me—

Or did they grow inside me?

(Outro)
No buzzing lights
No silver haze
No steady hand
No numbered days

Just freedom

Cold and endless

And me
Wanting to go home
